Here at the Butler County Humane Society we have a thorough process for giving up your pet that allows us to place them with a loving home. As a no kill shelter, we will care for your pet until they eventually find a new forever family, as long as they remain physically happy and healthy. There is a waiting list for owner surrendered pets, and all surrenders are by appointment only. To speak with a member of staff and get on the waiting list to surrender your pet, please call us at (724) 789 - 1150 during regular business hours. We'd be happy to help you through this difficult time.

Questions to Consider Before Giving Up Your Pet
Surrendering your pet for adoption at the Butler County Humane Society is a permanent decision. Once you've given up your pet, you will not be permitted to visit with them or take them back, as this can cause additional stress to the animal that has been given up. It is important to be completely sure that this is the best option for you and your pet, and carefully consider the following questions before you choose to surrender them for adoption.

Is there something that could help me keep my pet?
If you're looking to surrender your pet due to a behavior issue, consider finding a dog trainer to work with to help and correct some of the behaviors. Depending on the severity of the problem, it may be something that could easily be remedied with an obedience course. Ask our front desk staff for a list of recommended trainers!

Is there a friend or family member that would be interested in taking my pet?
Sometimes you never know until you ask! Advertise your pet to friends, family members, co-workers, and neighbors. It's always possible that someone already in your life who may have a relationship and knowledge of your pet would be willing to give them a new home!

Is my pet healthy and safe to re-home?
Has your pet ever shown aggression towards people or bitten anyone? Do they have up to date medical records? Would a major change like being re-homed negatively impact your pet's behavioral or physical health? These are all important questions to ask yourself before you decide that surrendering your pet is the right choice for you and your four-legged friend.

How to Surrender Your Pet to the BCHS
If you've come to the conclusion that giving up your pet for adoption is the right choice for you and your dog or cat, please make sure to read over our owner surrender policy.
  • All owner surrenders will be placed on a wait list, and all actual animal drop offs¬†must be by appointment only. We have very limited space at the shelter, and it's very possible that we may not have room to house your pet immediately. Due to this, it is important to call ahead. If you know you are moving and cannot take your pet, do not wait until a week before you need to move to call into the shelter and attempt to get on the waiting list.

  • Once you've been placed on the waiting list, you will need to wait until the shelter calls to schedule a time for you to come in and surrender your pet. Time spent on the waiting list can vary due to a number of factors at the shelter, and it is hard to give an estimated wait time. Everything is based on room at the shelter, however, and there is no way to create additional space or take on an animal if we do not have room.

  • As a courtesy to the individuals who did call first and were put on the waiting list, anyone who appears at the shelter with an animal(s) and did not have an appointment will be charged the standard fee plus an additional fee if we happen to have the room to accept the animal at that time. All decisions during these situations are up to our Kennel Director.

  • At the time of surrender, we will ask you to fill out a background sheet on your pet so that we will know a little about them. Please provide as much detail as possible on this sheet so that we may find the best home possible for your surrendered pet.

  • When you surrender a pet to the shelter, you will be required to pay a surrender fee. Typically the fee is $100 per animal, but please refer to the chart below for further pricing information.

  • With the best interests of the surrendered pet in mind, you will be unable to visit with them after they have been surrendered. If you would like, our staff can call you to let you know that they have been adopted, but are unable to give out any additional information on their new owners.

The Butler County Humane Society cannot take owner surrenders that:
  • Are not from Butler County. As we are a small, non-profit facility we unfortunately only have the resources to assist animals that live in Butler County, PA.

  • Have a history of aggression towards people or other animals, including but not limited to bite history.

  • Have severely declining health, including but not limited to canine or feline distemper, Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV) or Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) and kidney or liver failure.

Owner Surrender Price List:
  • Dog or Cat Over 12 weeks of age: $100.00
  • Puppy or Kitten Under 12 weeks: $50.00
  • Litters of 2-4 Puppies or Kittens Under 12 Weeks: $100.00
  • More Than 4 Animals: $150.00
The Butler County Humane Society surrender fees help cover the costs associated with the care and treatment of the animal you are surrendering and the animals housed in our shelter.

We are a non-profit organization, and we do not receive any federal funding. We rely solely on donations, bequests, and fundraising initiatives. Therefore, we depend on collecting a surrender fee when you surrender an animal. Surrender fees help cover the cost of food, care, and any medical treatments that may be required to keep your pet healthy and happy.

We understand that it is very difficult to give up a pet, and that sometimes paying a fee to do so may seem like an additional burden. Here at the Butler County Humane Society, it is our promise that all surrendered pets will be cared for and placed in loving homes to the best of our abilities. Surrender fees are crucial to allowing us to provide these animals and all of the animals at the shelter with the care, love, and attention that they need. Final decisions on the intake of any animals will be at the sole discretion of our Kennel Director.

Please consider these options before giving up your pet:
  • If you are surrendering your animal due to behavior issues, please consider speaking with a member of our staff. We may have suggestions to help you keep your pet in your home.

  • If you are surrendering your animal due to behaviors that may be linked to a possible medical issue, please ask to speak with a staff member. We can refer you to a local veterinarian for consultation.

Here at the Butler County Humane Society we understand that surrendering a pet is a difficult decision that impacts owner and animal a like. For more information on how to surrender a dog or cat to the shelter, or to learn more about other options to assist in a difficult time so that you don't have to, please contact the shelter at (724) 789 - 1150 during regular business hours.
